Slug Defences - has anyone else heard of this................?

If you want to protect a patch of your garden say your strawberry bed from slugs.  Get some timber to surround the bed, spray the timber with WD40 and then put in place - apparently slugs hate the smell of jolly ole WD40

Anyone heard of it?  Anyone tried it

this will do nothing to control the slugs already present in the soil, so I can't see that it would help much
