I'd have thought it too late, but if you're going to stand any chance, I'd be inclined to get them off to a flyer by pre-chitting and starting the plants somewhere warmer than the outside temps we're getting at the moment.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'd also say it's getting late for starting off sweetcorn but there's no harm in trying I suppose.  The alternate - how about growing baby sweetcorn?  As they don't need pollinating, you harvest the small unripe cobs instead, so a shorter growing season  ;)

Completely agree with DD; you would need an exceptionally good and long summer to pull it off, especially in Manchester!  8)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Would it be worth going for a "quicker" variety like Swift?

Hmm- maybe OK if we get a good summer I'd go for a quick growing variety and sow under cloches and keep 'em there as long as possible.  I've grow decent sweetcorn in Rochdale.

Yes, I thought as much. I was late last year too and managed to get a half decent crop of some pretty small plants - I'd have liked to do it properly this year... I'll give it a go and pull my finger out last year.

Bad planning.  ::) :blush:

greedy slugs finished off half of mine before they even got to the plot so sowed more last weekend and they are through already even though they are outside. I am banking on everything being later due to weather and hope they catch up. Give it a go Scabs it might just work.

B&Q are doing sweetcorn 8 for 1.78 or 4 strips of veg for a fiver. I bought 2 packs of sweetcorn last week and got 35 plants out of them.  This may help you out.

is it to late even when they say the season is a month behind?or has that no relevance to planting times?  :mellow: my corn is only a couple of inches high.

It's only relevant if you get the lost month back by having a long warm summer, and there's no guarantee of that!  ;)
