Mum of stig, you had downpours? we are only just down the road from you and got nothing :(

I'm sure if you water under the foliage into the soil it's ok if the soil isn't too bare it shouldn't evaporate with a good soaking.

Also it's a full moon (ish, waning) now, which means the water in the table is closer to the surface of the soil apparently (I'm experimenting with moon phase planting!!)

You must mulch in hot weather to save water. You water the soil not the plant.
Stick the hose under the mulch or use a weep hose. You could stick upside down bottomless bottles here and there and fill with water and let them drain slowly. Sprinkle snail bait if mulching.

As I said in a previous post on this subject.......Farmers water all day long with those huge sprinklers and they wouldn't do it if it harmed the plants, after all it's their livelihood.

If plants are so sensitive that putting cold water on them when they are hot causes shock, then this must make us think they have feelings. That would throw a spanner in the works where vegetarians are concerned.
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

Watering in the afternoon sun won't kill them, the worst it will do is cause sun scorch on the leaves.  It is rather inefficient to water then as it will evaporate faster than if you do it at night.  There are no rights or wrongs, just do what you gotta do and understand the difference in circumstances.
