how much space does a chicken bottom need?
« on: June 13, 2010, 14:23 »
STILL sorting out my coop and have had much discussion on perches which is not yet finalised.

My perches will probably have to run along the longer sides of my coop next to the walls but I'm not sure how much space to leave behind the bars to accommodate the chickens' bottoms so that they don't poop down the wall.

I don't have that much space to play with as I need two perches opposite each other and have read about not having them too close so that they peck each other from opposite sides overnight.

Looking for some advice on how much rear end space to allow please.

Thanks v. much all.

Not sure I'm afraid but I know the recommendation is 12" per bird for space on the perch.  Someone will I'm sure come along and help.
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

I have one coop where the perches are on an incline and they tend to perch with the heads facing the wall and their bums towards the middle of the coop.

Casey do you have a photograph of your perch that you could post to show everybody?  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks - have since read in a book that I should leave about 8" for their bottoms.

I've left about a foot between the two facing perches, hopefully enough to stop pecking.

However, I'll see how it works out when my girls arrive - if needs be we can change it to something else.
