It's always been a luxury product but going to the trouble of growing it and thumbing your nose at the supermarkets must be worthwhile and at least it will be fresh.  Thank you all for your advice and encouragement.

It's a luxury if you have to buy it at supermarket prices, but it gives us a fresh veg every other day when there's little else coming in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

PM me your address and I'll send you some seed. Throw them in some soil when they arrive and you'll have 1 year old crowns next year anyway ;)

Sowing saved seed may be cheap short term but keep in mind that you are planting for a 20 year crop.

If you want up to date varieties with all male plants then buy crowns

For me it wasn't a case of saving money, but a personal target.

It wasn't about saving money, that was just a bonus ;) It was to late for me to get and plant crowns so sowing seeds didn't cost me the year that it normally would ;)

Pretty sure that some of mine are female based on this years foliage ... I suppose I could rip them out and replace them with some new plants next year until I eventually end up with 100% males, but I'm happy enough to just leave them to it ;)
