cat in the coop - should I worry?
« on: June 10, 2010, 20:32 »
We let our chickens out for a stroll round the garden, but the minute they left the run, the cat went in and into the coop. Any thoughts about this. should we worry, if the cats goes in the coop with the hens who would win? And can anyone suggest a way to discourage the cat.

most cats are fine with chickens if not a little scared of them after receiving a swift peck from them, perhaps she was just investigating their home to see if it's more comfortable than hers  ;)

Have had three cats - never seen one brave enough to tackle a chicken, but seen the girls chase the cats away from its dish and then steal their breakfast

One of my cats takes her afternoon nap in the nest boxes  ::)  I have on occasion heard the girls kick up a fuss when going to lay later than usual and finding her in there sleeping  Usually she comes out running tail between her legs - but the next day she gets back in (she seems to love sleeping in hemcore!).

That all sounds hopeful. The cat has stayed clear of the hens so far, but he does love a warm corner so may be that's what he's looking for.

One of my (now late) cats used to love sleeping in the nest box of the neighbour's chickens across the road.  Hens and chickens seemed to get on fine.  She didn't think much of the geese tho' when they were there for a short while.

Has to be said though, if a 15 yr old cat could get into the run and nest box for a snooze every day, I wonder why she was surprised when the fox regularly legged it with one of her chooks?
