« on: June 07, 2010, 10:30 »
fluffy has begun staying in the nest box, sitting on her's and other girls eggs, if we move her she clucks a lot has a bit of food but then goes straight back to nest box, has she become broody and if so what can i do to stop her,
we have recently spent a few weekend away from home and the eggs have not been collected daily but left so could this have caused her to go broody.
what can i do to stop this, any help welcome

yes she is broody and the eggs not being collected may have triggered this off. If you take a look at this post you will find my usual method - a dog cage. A couple of days in the pen sorts them out

Yes she definitely sounds broody.
If you don't want her to hatch eggs, you could try putting her in something like a dog crate or shut her out of the hen house so she can't sit.
If you don't move her, she may continue being broody for at least 3 more weeks. If you keep taking her out, you will break the broody cycle and she might stop after about 5 days.
Make sure she has plenty of food and water wherever she is  :).
All lives are precious.

thank you joyfull and pretty chick for your answers, will have a go at breaking this broody hen, will let you know how i get on and which method works best for me.
must say the water treatment sounds a bit harsh though, so don't think i will be using that one, i would be weter than fluffy i think

just taken fluffy out of nest box and locked her out, she is not happy >:(, there were two eggs from 4 hens so don't think the other girls will be happy when they are ready to lay.
