beefsteak tomato flowers
« on: June 01, 2010, 10:15 »
for the first time this year I am trying some of the really big toms.
I've noticed on the first few flower trusses that the first flower is one of those big sort of multi flowers, the others look ordinary.
Is it only the first flower that sets a big fruit

The 'multiflowers' will produce one of those oddly shaped tomatoes that someone posted a pic of a few days back.  The rest should produce big 'ordinary' tomatoes.

I suppose you could pick the multiflower off, but I never do.

Ours were great last year, despite neglect.

Huge and juicy, with the top most one boggled and weird and others more normal.

We usually get some big 'uns and some little 'uns. All delicious warm off the plant straight into a Greek salad, eaten outside when the Dreadful Neighbours are away. Yum. :)

I put some Beefsteak seeds in a few pots ages ago but nothing happened. Everything else came up & isn't doing too bad.
Last week i noticed these pots on the side which had started to grow.
Hadn't bothered with them & basically had forgotten about them.
Things seem to grow better if i leave them alone  :D

They obviously only just had the right conditions for them to germinate :D

Perhaps they needed a bit more warmth than there was when you sowed them.....who knows ::).........now you just have to keep them growing

Don't know if it's better for me to leave them alone :D

All my seeds are started off at home on the kitchen windowsill, so warmth shouldn't be an issue.
Other half gets quite frustrated with me. As soon as i clear one lots & put out to harden off, more go up :D

They are well worth growing for fun and flavour. Pink Caspian August last year.

I can almost taste that Ivah, fried with gammon, shallots and a few salad leaves, Mmm.
Growing some for the first time this year,  if they grow as good as that then I'l be happy :)

So would I if each tomato came with a free pound coin. Interesting plant!!!  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
