Cucumber stem
« on: May 31, 2010, 14:56 »
Hello all,

I have been trying to grow Marketmore cucumbers. My previous attempts of around twenty seedlings has resulted in dead seedlings :( I had three seeds left, two have germinated and (touch wood) are still alive. They are about three to four inches tall  at the moment.  One of the seedlings has a very week stem. it will break if I move it I'm sure. Will the seedling tolerate being replanted deeper, so that part of the stem is buried, or will it just wither away like all the others? The stem problem is about half way up.

Thanks

They are notorious for rotting off if you get the stem wet, and you surely will if you plant it deeper.
Can you tie it to a small cane so that the stem is supported and it may strengthen up as it grows.
