How much feed?
« on: May 28, 2010, 08:01 »
How much feed do i give my 3 hens?
Was told to give them 1kg scoop from the farm i got them, but since i've been worming them with Flubenvet i have been giving them 2kg scoop as this is what it states on the box for mixing.
Over the last couple days "Little One" who only normally lays every other day has laid each day.
Was she not getting enough or could it be the wormer?

it could be the weather or just the fact that she has now settled down into a regular laying pattern.
With flubenvet all you have to do is mix the scoop with 2kgs of layers then when they have eaten all this mix up some more until they have finished the course. They don't have to eat it all in one day. So keep the mixed stuff in a lidded container.
Layers pellets should be fed on an adlib basis - I just fill my feeders up (mine hold 6kgs) and then when they get low I top them up again, the girls then take what they need as and when  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

They normally get a 1kg scoop of layers mash per day.
Only been giving them 2kg of layers mash whilst i've been giving them the Flubenvet.
I asked the vet where i got it from as i only have 3 hens & he said to give them what it says on the tub

Hi Craig, 2kg of food should last your girlies over 5 days - based upon each hen eating approximately 125g per day.

With flub, make up 2kg of food with the tsp (or whatever) of flub and put it in an airtight box.  Give the girls 500g (approx) of the treated food per day.

The way you are medicating them is wasting medication and food (and therefore your money ;))

Thanks for that - thought it was a lot, but been new to keeping hens was just doing what i was told from farm i bought them from & vet.
They have only 1 more days treatment to have (was told 7 days) so will start to give them half scoop per day.

When the instructions on the tub say mix 1 scop with 2kg of food- it dosent mean to do that everyday, it means thats the ratio of medicine to food. As others have said i would imagine 2kg would last most of the week, so weigh out 2kg of food, add 1 scoop of flubenvet, mix very well, store in an air tight container, only use this medicated feed over the next 7 days, if you runout mix more as te worming needs to be done for 7 whole days.

Is it best to use meal rather than pellets when treating with flubenvet ?
