seed spuds - still got a load!!
« on: June 13, 2007, 19:38 »
planted a full bed of different spuds a while back and all going great guns - but - I've still got stacks of seed spuds in the shed still!!

Any point in planting them or shall I just compost them now?
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

You got the room - you plant 'em.

When we first cleared Mrs. Digger's plot 2 years ago, it was about this time of year. One of the neighbouring chaps gave her some Charlotte seed spuds & she had a great crop.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I read somewhere that it's best to just bin spare spuds rather than compost them, forget why tho.  I have two spud plants coming up in my compost bin at the moment, the originals weren't brilliant so it'll be interestng to see how these turn out, if they do after the turning of the heap etc!

Putting spuds in compost....Its possibly because of viruses and disease, or as you have found out they just grow in the compost bin!

I stupidly threw in pumpkin seeds at the end of last year, (along with lots of tatty peelings) When I looked one day it was like something out of Alien! Every last pumpkin seed had germinated and all the eyes of the spuds had begun to grow!

I do have some saved seedlings in the garden for free though  :D
