Comfrey flowering
« on: May 18, 2010, 20:14 »
My comfrey is begining to flower, should i have cut it right back before now?

Will it come back again as quick?

How much do i cut it back by?  Can i remove ALL leaves, or do i leave some.

Presumably the flowers can be used to make tea feed aswell as the leaves.

Thanks in advance

Liv.

Hello Livvy,

You can cut it down to a few inches, leave a few smaller leaves if you like. Now it's warmer and lighter, there will be no stopping it, so long as it's not bone dry.

Flowers, stalks and all can be used.

I guess you've seen:

I would take the leaves off as you need them rather than cutting the whole plant down

we cut ours down to the ground ,

stuff it into onion bags and place in 45 gallon water butts ,

leave it for 2-3 weeks

give a good stir and hold your breath , pinch your nose , lol

Take a yard of large downpipe, run it into a funnel and the funnel into a large empty slug pellet container. Now fix the downpipe to something solid like your shed.

Stuff the comfrey leaves down the pipe and weigh them down with a pop bottle of water on a string so you can pull it back out when you need to top up the pipe with more comfrey leaves.

After a few weeks you will have a bottle full of comfrey liquor which you can use as a liquid feed.

Cut the comfrey down to a few leaves but leave some flowers for the bees and beauty. It soon recovers.

I have my comfrey next to the compost bins so it gets a steady feeding when it rains, from the compost run-off.

I'm a bit keen on Comfrey!

My plants planted in Sept last year are going great. All flowering etc.

For the first year do I just leave and don't cut?
Top tip for camping....don't go.

I cut mine right down to the ground twice a year.
I water them thouroughly after each cut and give them a BF&B feed at the beggining spring and then again mid summer.

I drive a spade through the plant at ground level when the plant is about waist high, put the lot in a black bin liner, seal it and poke a hole through the bottom of the bag. The bag is then balanced on an old plastic bin and left in the sun for a few weeks. The comfrey wilts and liquid drains into the bin. My plants always grow back as the roots go very deep.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I think I've got the wrong sort. It's been flowering since a few days after the weather first improved, and it never gets above knee height. It's good weed suppressing ground cover, and while I could pull some leaves off it, it's never tall enough to actually cut down,  it's already down!  ???
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
