Parsnip success!
« on: May 12, 2010, 21:50 »
I'm sorry to sound like Im bragging  :tongue2: but I feel like I need to shout this from the rooftops. No chitting seeds, no fancy paper pots (but i did consider this seriously as I have consistantly failed to germinate parsnips in the past). I threw 3 year old seeds into the ground and almost all of them have come up!
There is definately an element of luck involved with this growing business
I am now the proud owner of around 100 8 milimetre  tall parsnips. Go ahead slugs - make my day!
The force is strong in this one!

Chitted mine ages ago on kitchen paper and decided to put them straight into the ground in a line of compost.

first time sowed direct and ok there are gaps but enough through to make it a resonable crop - just wish now I'd put them somewhere else as I thought they would fail as before :D

throwing 4-5 seeds into each shallow holes along the rows, at least one is highly likely to germinate surely? Well that's my method which has for me been 100% fool proof. SOmetimes if I doubt things I might throw in even mroe seeds per hole...and the thinning out is not a chore.

ACtually, sometimes I have transplated some of the thinnings elsewhere with success.

Most of mine came through on the plot, the odd gap got filled in with the ones I had grown in paper pots.

Im glad I had the back-up, my parsnip rows are full and looking rather smart.  :tongue2:

Of the x30 paper pots I made, x26 germinated. I used around twenty to fill in the gaps, did this two weeks ago and all have taken and are growing on as normal.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.
