Chitting sweetcorn
« on: May 12, 2010, 11:52 »
I have read a lot on here about chitting sweetcorn and have chitted my seeds ready for potting up (I have had no success in pots before).

However, I now don't know which way up they go!! Is the long shoot the root and the short root the seedling? I presume it is but I would rather check than waste the seeds.

Many thanks

I think you have chitted it for very looooong time :D. we normally put them in paper pots when it has one shoot and thats root so we say chit down.
Now that calls for a pic so that people can judge.
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

They have only been chitted for 3 days.

To try and answer 2 posts.

1 - Mine were sufficiently chitted after one day, although I looked after 2 days!

2 - Plastic container, moist paper towel in the bottom, put your sweetcorn on it & pop it in the airing cupboard.

Have a look at this:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'll bring the piccie over to this thread. The roots have very fine hairs on them.

You'll note one or two not sprouted - well that's saved a bit of compost!

Is the long shoot the root and the short root the seedling?

The root appears first, then the shoot. Thus root will be longer than shoot where there are both.

Here's some I over-chitted earlier  :nowink:

Once chitted what do you then do with them - obviously plant! - what depth?, do you have the shoot sticking out of the compost of just bury the whole lot root side pointing down to the depth you would plant non chitted corn?

I assume the corn seed should be at a depth of 1 inch. the roots go beneath it and the shoots above obviously
