Chitting Sweetcorn
« on: April 19, 2009, 19:17 »
As so many have recommended it, I thought I'd try pre-chitting my sweetcorn this year.

I either missed it, or no one mentioned a time scale. So after a mere 2 days I had a peek

Keep an eye on yer chits people!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That is fast DD, is it because you rolled them in paprika? :tongue2:

Mine look nothing like that, well they are pink but they don't have the nice long root part.  Happily I have some germinating in pots so all is not lost.

chitting sweetcorn shows whats viable Hindy, so you dont waste time planting useless seeds. Saying that, I havent chitted mine myself, just sown in pots. Im not worried as Im using the same seed as DD (he sent me some ealier this year) so I now know its fine!

Last year with my s/c the cobs were like only half developed, (the stem end) anyone know the cause of this?

Thanks Paula, had I not been carving the roast, that would have been the very reply - especially as these seed are last year's I'd expect one or two extra failures and I hate wasting compost. (Actually I'd re-use it for my radish!).

The red stuff is, of course, an anti-fungal coating, NOT paprika! :tongue2:

Poor pollination probably, give the plants a good shake when they're in pollen. I take it you planted in blocks, not rows?

Did you plant in blocks Hindy? It sounds like they didnt get decent pollination.
