Naked chickens!
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:50 »
I did have this problem a while back with some previous chickens but now it seems to have come back with my current ones.   My three girls have got bare bottoms!  Can't seem to find any obvious reason for it and they seem very healthy and are each laying an egg a day and seem happy, so presumably it can't be anything too serious.  It does look awful though!  They don't peck at each other so it isn't that.  We feed them lots of greenery from the allotment and layers' pellets together with kitchen scraps.  We use Diatom in the house.
I would be grateful for any advice.

Have you given your coop a good clean out? It could be that there's red mite in there and they're irritated by them to the point where they are pulling their feathers out?

Do they peck at night when they are roosting?

Thank you for the replies.  We clean the coup out regularly and we use the diatom in the run too.  I read that they sort of treat themselves if they dust bath in it?  Not sure if they peck when they roost but there never seem to be feathers lying around so I think probably not.

I am having the exact same problem one of my ladies has been bald in the bum area since about December and now the other lady is on her way and is looking very sad. I have used Red Mite Powder on them and in the shed. I have a completely covered run and wondered if the pvc sheeting is not letting them get enough sunlight in? They feed on layers pellets and greens from the garden, bit of porridge if I overmake and bits but mainly just the layers pellets with spice in to keep them healthy. They are laying every day. :(
Thanks in advance.
