Hi all,

I'm going to plant my first veg in my plot this week and wondered do I absolutely have to chitt my seeding potatoes before planting?

I've never bought them before (as it's my first plot) and I'm not sure if it's OK to plant un-chitted so late.

As long as they're seed potatoes, they'll come up, chitted or unchitted. My family as always planted unchitted potatoes and we always get great crops.

They'll be fine. Chuck em in! Dont leave it much longer though - get them in now

Cheers Guys - Planting early this week!!

One question - if the frost damages potatoes so badly, why do you plant earlies during the peak frost time - do earlies cope with the frost better?

Planting at this time seems sensible cause you are less likely to get a frost (although this week we are expecting one!).

You plant at that time as they are safe underground and hope by the time they pop through the danger of frost is over.

As you can see, it doesn't  always work, especially if you try & sneak a week or two early.
