Double yolkers
« on: May 09, 2010, 18:44 »
A couple of my black rock hens often lay eggs with double yolks in. How rare is this? Or is it fairly common?
All lives are precious.

When my girls first came into lay we had alot but not so many now .I think im right in saying its common in new layers but can be a problem if much older girls are doing it .Im sure someone will be along shortly who knows a bit more about it than i do :)

I have a friend who keeps hens commercially, for selling eggs. She has 100 pullets every year (sells them at a year old, and replaces them), and she has trays of HUGE double yolkers during their first few months of laying. They are too big to fit in eggboxes. They settle into laying a near perfect daily egg by the start of summer.

It is also true that if this happens in an older hen, it could be a symptom of  something more serious, or the stages of menopause.

Thank you very much TeaPots, most interesting  :)
Hopefully my hens will grow out of it soon (our eggs won't fit in the egg boxes either!).
