Numpty Husband
« on: May 04, 2010, 07:45 »
We have hatched our own chickens to eat, they are now 24 weeks old and the cockerels are ready for the table. My husband decided that yesterday was the day to dispatch them. Unfortunately he didn't really think it through and had not taken the birds off food with acs in it that they were fed on.

This is not the first time that we have grown up our own chickens for us and we have always taken them off acs food two weeks before we kill them. I am not sure what he was thinking of yesterday.

So can we eat the cockerels or not?? How dangerous is ACS to humans??

are you sure their feed has acs in it? I buy organic which doesn't but I have spoken to Grannie Annie and Brian and layers shouldn't have acs in it only rearers and chick crumb does otherwise you shouldn't eat the eggs.
If you are unsure then contact the feed manufacturer, they should be able to tell you.
Staffies are softer than you think.

chick crumb is only for up to 6 weeks then you are supposed to introduce rearers/growers then layers or if you have your cockerels seperate the they can have finisher or mixed corn. I wouldn't eat these birds (you shouldn't eat the eggs from a bird fed with acs either).
Sorry if it isn't what you wanted to hear  :(

it means that the feed has anti coccidiosis treatment in it. It is in chick crumb and rearer/growers feed but not in layers. No organic feed has it in.

I know, I am so miffed off with him. >:(  I honestly thought he had changed food and didn't check with him, so I blame myself too.

This is only the second time we have done this, but even so!!!!
