When I first took on my plot I had lots of 'greens' to clear and these went into the compost bin.  I used paper/dried greens/cardboard/egg shells/tea bags etc to create some 'browns' for the bin too.

Now, since I got my chickens I have a problem!  I put their poo along with the shredded paper and aubiose (all browns I think) into the compost bin, and they eat all of the 'greens'.  Will I ever get useable compost from the browns or is there anything I can add to create greens?

Does that make sense?  Sorry if it doesn't!

Sorry DavidT, Aubiose is a bedding usually used for horses which I use for the chickens.  It is fully compostable and is a bit like sawdust.  The chickens eat all the greens as when I weed now I put them into their run.  There are obviously not as many now as there were when I first cleared the plot, but a bucket or so every couple of weeks.

If you have no spare kitchen waste for the bin, you could ask your neighbour for theirs. Do you put your grass cuttings in?
My chickens get some kitchen scraps, but I also put some in the compost bin wrapped in newspaper.

So, you feed the greens to the chooks. They extrude it out the other end onto this bedding. Which gets put on the compost heap. That is perfect recycling. Keep up the good work.

all browns still rot down unless overwoody - farmyard manure is all brown but of course the activator is integral. Our ducks bed on straw and that rots OK with or without greens
