Hi all,
I just wondered as this is my first time growing potatoes, if I pull up a row say, how long do you think they (Pentland Javelin) will store for as I am thinking of squeezing in some more crops? They are wilting now despite watering them (maybe I should have watered more).
Or should I leave them in the soil for as long as possible?

Thanks,

Wayne.
Cheers,

Wayne.

We kept Arran Pilot for months - if you can keep them in a cool dark place they'll store reasonably well.

We also kept Anya (2nd early) through to Christmas.
Check out our books - ideal presents

Silly question:  How did you store them?

I kept duke of york (second earlies) in an uncovered tray in the basement for 3weeks without any problems :D  We polished off the last of them last night!

And there's my Duke of Yorks still in the ground, just starting to flower now. Appetite whetted. :D

We store our spuds in old paper spud sacks.... but we do not grow main crop they take up so much space, just first earlies and salad spuds,
Trying to be green and as self sufficient as possible...........

Well we have pulled our new pots. now and put them in an old paper sack, hopefully they will last a while so we can enjoy them.
I've prepared the soil again and put some more beetroot in which will hopefully mature before the frosts.

This is my first year so I've been finding my feet, I planted main crop 'desiree' too and these are looking good, however they have taken up most of my 'root' part of the plot so next year I'll probably just do the earlies and use the space for other root crops.

We bought some hessian sacks -to keep potatoes in. They insulate, keep dark and allow to breathe.

Ideal for potatoes is to store at 5 degrees - you don't want them to freeze or get too warm. Val (who is saner than I) reckoned climate controlled storage was OTT even for my potatoes.
