anyone pulling their first new potatoes today?
« on: June 22, 2013, 11:29 »
i went to the plot to plant out my psb under netting, not really thinking any spuds would be ready yet, but i dug one anyway as it was in flower and we've had heavy rain over the last few days......and......one charlotte has given me about 16 nice spuds, enough for tea for two anyway :) im delighted.

anyone else going to test their potatoes for tonights tea?

I think it's worth a furtle!  Not sure if the ones I have in a pot are Charlotte (early) or Rocket (second early)  ::) but need the pot back for a squash plant.  Will let you know how I fare!  :D

I planted two maincrops and think I put the first earlies in the space between - because the logic was the two main crops would then have more growing space.

I think that was my plan but of course I didn't write it down at the time (note to self: write things down).

so I think I may have been harvesting some early maincrop spuds that hadn't filled out yet and I have just discovered some first earlies which are just bigger than hens eggs. could have been harvesting a couple of weeks ago if I'd remembered where I'd put them!

Pulled my first Charlottes last night. Was hoping to feed a family of 6, but after pulling 2 plants up I had a bag with some little things the size of between a marble and a ping pong ball so I called an end to proceedings. Me and the mrs had a little saucepan with these lovely white spuds in with some home picked mint and the kids had frozen chips!
Wont be having another delve under the ground for a couple of weeks in the hope that the crop have grown a bit!

Not going to either furtle or even have a dig...  :(

My tatty tops (Rocket) at the mo are tiny, only about only shin high, yet many have flowers on and others need to do a lot of catching up, the size of each plant next to each other varies so much it just looks odd / wrong.

Most potatoes were not planted this year before the beginning of April, and given the 12 week or so norm, in my view not worth digging up any earlies until the start of July this year, unless one really likes baby potatoes and needs the space for new Summer sowings.
Some people just can't wait  ::)

I've tried pulling potatoes in the past, but all I get is a handful of leaves!

(Sorry  )
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

One Rocket plant provided enough for tonight's Saag Alloo (along with spinach, which is romping away).  Wonderful!   I love this growing lark - my first year, and already eating lettuce, radish, rocket as well as the spuds and spinach.  Days away from broad beans.  Can't wait!
