Is 2 chickens too few??
« on: April 16, 2010, 20:20 »
Been measuring up where I could put a run in my back garden but it's only 2.25 sqm !!!

People have said on here there should be 1 sqm per bird, so, if I only got 2 chooks, would they be ok just the two of them??  :(

HELP!! We would love to have our own chooks and eggs at home.

I only have 2 hens and they seem happy enough. They do have free run of the garden for most of the day though. You could go for bantams perhaps?

The trouble with having only two hens is if one of them dies.  I think three would be better.

3 is a better number. If one goes broody, or is ill, or even dies, it would leave the other one lonely. 3 is deffo considered a better number. Maybe make sure you dont get big hens.

I did have 3 but one died. If I get another they will try to kill it.

I have pekin Bantams, they are very friendly and don't make too much noise. They are fairly small, so I think you could get away with 3.

Also, because they have feathered feet, they don't make too much mess, so you might be able to let them free-range sometimes.

Thanks all for the advice and info, I'll see what breeds the OH likes,

Just another quick question, I think I saw some one already ask on here if it's ok to have them on bark chippings in the run, is this ok??

not really bark chippings, because i have been informed that they can tend to go mouldy, i have four chickens and they are on wood chippings, and they are very happy on that, they love having a good scrach round on that, good luck with your chooks. Peggygate
