Trail of Tears bean
« on: April 12, 2010, 12:42 »
A very kind person on the forum gave me some Trail of Tears beans (and because I am rubbish and ungrateful, I have completely forgotten who) and I will be putting them in this year, but I am struggling to find some info.

Do I plant end of April/May?

How tall does the plant grow and what sort of support does it require?

Does it need a load of organic matter putting in?

If anyone can enlighten me, I'd be very grateful.

Oh good, I've got one of those!  :D

Thanks Lesley, I saw that, yes... there's a few bits and bobs on t'Internet but I've not found anything very specific.

I may alternate them on the frame with my runners...

Iv'e got the sowing / growing instrustions some where for them from Real Seeds.
I got them a few years ago will try to find them and post on here. They are a climbing type similar to climbing french beans but only short about 4'' long. If you grow them with another type they may be hard to find among the foilage.

Dunno if it was me that sent them you, probably wasn't, but just in case it was "you ungrateful, ignorant bum, I hope like hell you ... urm .. have some mild discomfort or summat" :|

Anyway, I grew them last year and they REALLY can grow! 5' up the short side of my munty and then along the greenhouse roof over there 3' bed ... the 3' path ... and the next 3' bed ... I'm sure pythagoras could give you more of an exact measurement, best I can do is "wow!".

Will be growing them again this year but won't be staring them until early may (blackpool, in a covered bed so a couple of degrees warmer) and I'll probably direct sow like I did last year.

Bonus is : this years crop will be from last years seed :D

Over here they're called the Cherokee  Trail of Tears bean (Pole; 65-85 days) 1800's. So-named because it was carried by the Cherokee on their forced march. Pods turn dark purple with shiny black seeds. Delicious, prolific long producers.

Hi Jazz,

I'm sorted (in fact I may also be able to offer a few out) but I have no doubt someone else will take up your kind offer!  :)

Well done Yabba - you got a profanity through the censors! - I can't use a perfectly legitimate word for 'double digging' without asterisks appearing where the offending word should have been, but you've successfully managed to get to the 'bottom' of things.
