I know it is a starnge question but a couple of years ago I was able to grow tomatos and a cucumber in a porch out front.  The last two years nothing and I was out clearing up and I realised it was 2 years ago the other half put up nets.  These are not a pattern just a very fine mesh (if I can get her to take them down no need for new fleece) could they reduce light levels that much?

I have not had a problem with the curtains that I put up in my greenhouse for extra insulation and to stop nosey parkers looking in.

I also put net curtains up for summer shade in the greenhouse with no problem

Im currently using a plain, fine net curtain to cover a patch of carrots that are just coming through.

Its an experiment to see if it keeps the root fly off, I lost all my carrots last year to root fly.

I got the net curtain for free, loads of it and I already had the carrot seed, I have nothing to loose by giving it a go. If it works I will try a larger patch next year.
