I bought asparagus crowns a few weeks ago and put them in a cupboard till the time is right to plant them. I just took a look and they have sprouted very long, white shoots. Is this okay? Should I leave them as they are?

get them in the ground asap,and provide a bit fleece protection.then leave well alone for the next 3 years.
i grew mine from seed 5 years ago,and only now can i go for a good harvest.

Leave those shoots as they are. The plant has already sprouted its top growth, white due to lack of light, but to take them off now could make the plant more stressed, which it already will be in trying to adapt to light. You may not get more shoots this year so best to leave what you have.

I have this obsession with keeping these things in the dark. I don't know where it comes from.
