« on: April 07, 2010, 16:03 »
Ok,i know this is daft and it's not that I like things 'just so' but I have a hell of a job getting veg in straight lines even using string. They also go towards each other diagonally however hard I try!any tips!

They are very naughty.

Take a little more water with it, maybe?

I had the same thing happen with my november planted broad beans,
I planted them in perfectly straight rows and having all sprouted now they are up to 5 inch from where I planted them, I know it's not my bad planting as I left the taught strings in place .
I'm banned for being obnoxious (not pompous as you might have thought)

My eyes are not to be trusted either!  8)

Luckily my main growing plot is oblong and surrounded by slabs laid quite accurately, so it's quite easy to judge whether your pegs are in line or not.

Otherwise does your plot lend itself to measuring from a fixed point at each end of the row to achieve the same thing? (Wont work if your plot is round or oval!)

Reminds me of a joke, by the way:

A Polish man goes to the optician's for an eye test.
The optician asks him if he can read the middle line of the letters chart.

"Read it, I know him!", exclaims the Pole.  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Do you draw the hoe along the string?
Because if you do and the string is not taut then you will gradually go off line  :(

Just a thought

My potato beds look like the converging lines in diagrams showing how perspective works in drawings. I'm hoping it won't be too noticeable when all the leaves start to come up

Sorry Flump, I use the edge of a batten with measured lines on it.  ;)

Well if it is any comfort, all I have done so far is plant my sweet peas/beans/peas in newspaper pots which are not exactly wide. Having prodded a hole in the CENTRE of the pot with an old pencil, I dropped the beans/whatever into the hole and covered them up. They are just starting to sprout and the majority have shifted to one side and one actually sprouted at the side of the newspaper pot  ??? I reckon they shift when they get watered!

I bet the ones sown in wiggly lines taste just the same as the ones in straight lines  So long as you be careful when hoeing round the wiggles
