Just as an aside and an answer to a serious question - I gave up trying for straight lines and plant in blocks. Never mind the other gardeners if they grow!

Productivity is the name of the game not the inspection by the committee complaining that you don't grow in rows

I've never been able to plant in straight lines. I've used lines and planks , but they still are not too straight. (You should see my two rows of first earlies at the moment!!   I've stopped beating myself up about it and am always thrilled when everything comes through.  All the leaves do hide those "wiggly lines" wonderfully. :D

I can never work out why the row looks straight from one side of the plot and looks as it its escaping next door from the other side - but then I think I've parked the car straight and it never is - think I must be off centre :D :D :D

My potato beds look like the converging lines in diagrams showing how perspective works in drawings. I'm hoping it won't be too noticeable when all the leaves start to come up

could it just be perspective making them appear they are converging?  ::)

I have another problem as well. the plants move nearer/farther to each other in rows as well.
The over wintering onions were planted with proper lines and proper spacing between them in a row. but I found couple of them has got too friendly  !!
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

Are you sure you haven't been planting on a Sunday afternoon after a couple of glasses of something?

Three cheers for non-conformist vegetables!

I have exactly the same problem with lines of veg. I believe it is caused by two factors.

The first one is that my plot is not perfectly square.

The other is that when I use a string line I put the first plants directly under it but by the time I get to the other end I find that I am planting them a few inches on  my side of the string.

At one time I even suspected that the plants were sliding downhill at one end as my plot is on a slope!

I have not managed to solve the problem after 15 years on the same plot.
