Preventing pasting up?
« on: April 01, 2010, 23:07 »
One of my 16 chicklets seems prone to pasting up and I've been on bottom washing duty 4 times today - fortunately she seems to be the only one.

Currently I'm using sterile water and a swab to clean the majority of the poo off, however her bottom is looking nasty (the down, the skin is OK).  Given that this is only 3/4 days old (no sign of tail feathers - as of tonight!) ould it be OK for me to  actually dunk her bottom in some warm water to properly clean her down up?

Thanks for any help :)

Probably this would be fine as long as you use warm water and dry thoroughly using a warm (not hot) hairdrier.

It's sometimes called vent geet and the cause in chicks isn't known. The book treatment is to just pick it of gently.  If the chick doesn't get better it could be chronic and you might be advised to cull.  I guess you don't know if it's a pullet or cockerel yet.
Best of luck

Thanks HF :)

Fortnately bottom was all clear this morning after 9 hours, so I'm hoping s/he's over the worst.

Funnily enough, yesterday I would have said pullet, today I'm definitely leaning more towards cockerel, as everyone else is putting on feather much quicker.

S/he is a Cobb, so will be going in with the other broilers after the first 4-5 weeks.
