It's your choice whether you want them to remain in clumps or to divide them into singles. Both will work. They could go outside now as they're fairly hardy but if there's a good frost predicted, then cover with fleece for the night so they're not set back too much.

Plant them in their clumps and then pull the biggest from each clump as they grow until they are all gone. I would wait a day or two until the current cold spell is over before planting them out.

As an alternative to Salmo's suggestion: plant in clumps but leave the biggest to mature. You will have an onion the size of a ten p coin which you can pickle. Not as strong as shallots, but acceptable. I tried it last year and will repeat.

mine will be going out after this cold spell finishes , if it does!
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

We get through huge quantities of aliums in our house and I sow small amounts of spring onions in pots every 3-4 for weeks through most of the year. They will overwinter in an unheated greenhouse or window sill and you can have them fresh in the coldest weather. It's always seemed a bit daft to me to grow them in rows and even if you sow them in pots they can be planted out as clumps and pulled when required.
