Thanks folks, I never heard of sciarid fly before but I think I may have had them once on my mushrooms. (stop sniggering this is family site) ???
I am considering taking the ginger out of the compost and giving it a wash in slightly warm water then replanting in new compost. Does that sound like a good idea?

I'd be wary of doing that, gypsy, in case you damage any roots which have already developed.

Far better just to let the compost dry out a bit
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
