What eats tarragon?
« on: March 27, 2010, 21:59 »
I planted some French tarragon in my herb bed last year and it was doing great. When I looked at it a week ago, all the new shoots were looking very strong and healthy. When I looked at it today, it had been eaten down to a stump. It's surely too early for slugs and I have fencing round that plot to stop the rabbits, so what on earth is eating this?

Normally pests shy away from aromatics but if they're hungry, you can get cabbage loopers, cutworms, peach borers and leafrollers munching away.

Not too early for slugs at all. Loads of little black thin "keel" slugs just waiting for your asparagus to emerge, for you to plant tasty rows of lettcuce and carrots etc. They've certainly had a good chump on my delphiniums! Also under large stones or bits of wood will be snails and larger slugs. I often find its a good place to trap them - leave a brick or roof tile alongside the plant and look under next morning, they will be sheltering under there in the moisture.
