Runner Bean Plants
« on: June 02, 2007, 09:12 »
Hi,
My Runner Beans  which are currently in pots have germinated and are about two inches tall.  :D
At what height should I plant them into the ground? And will they need any protection from slugs etc at that point?

Thanks

I'd wait until they have at least 2 large 'proper' leaves.

Anf yes to the latter!!!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yep as diggers says wait for the leaves, I protect mine with 2 litre pop bottles that have been cut top and bottom so they slide over your beans, thus far they have been really good, in fact so much so that neighbours are using this too.

Do you leave them on permanently?  Strikes me that they'd make watering much easier too.

Just off to Tesco to buy 100 bottles of pop. This weekend's forecast is 'windy'.

most def (definitly) do Mr WG, I slip them over the canes and when I plant said beans slip over beans and about an inch deep, protects them from the wind as well untill they get going and yep, watering is a lot easier as is hoeing, you less likely to knock em down as the bottle protects the base of the beans.
