Do my Runners need a nesting box??
« on: March 17, 2010, 21:21 »
Hi All,

I recently acquired 3 beautiful Indian Runners, a drake and two girlies.  I built them a house with a drop down door which acts as ramp.  Not sure if pics will work but I'll have a go...

Anyway, they have settled into my wartime garden at the museum where I work really well and my chickens don't seem to be too bothered that they run around the same garden.  When I haven't got too many seedlings growing I let them do a 'grab a bug' run around the garden.

They also enjoy chicken rugby with the girls too, best game ever!

So, the drake and one of the girls will be about 7months now and the other girl now about 5 months.

The 7month old has laid just ONE egg since I've had her - I've had them all about a month.

I put straw down in their house for bedding and they have a pond, and eat bugs, grass, layers pellets, some greens, a bit of corn and duck food which comes in red/brown discs.  They also guzzle puddles and drink LOADS of water.  The rest of the time is spent nattering and chasing each other and splashing rather loudly in and out of the pond.

Is there anything else I need to do for them? They seem really happy and content and easily go into their house when I need to put them away now.

What about the laying? Do the girls need a nest box? Does it matter if the chooks lay in there too - I'm guessing it doesn't matter  :)

What a relief.... I thought at first "Runners" (in the subject line) was something to do with beans!

They never bother with nest boxes although mine usually pic a favourite place to lay. Wish one of them hadn't picked the very back of the run under the duck house - a right pain to get to!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
