cat latrine - very annoyed
« on: March 17, 2010, 08:37 »
Hi All,

It seems all of the local and our cats having been making use of my dug over raised bed as their new toilet station. It is literally covered in cat poo.

I am soooooo cross, I hate cat poo at the best of times, and now in my raised bed, eughhh!.

When I get rid of it all, and have re-dug, is it safe to grow food in there? I was hoping to put my carrots and onions in it, but now feel really queasy about it all. My fault I should have covered it, but too late now.
Any advice please.

I had this problem too but in my greenhouse,
I had a broken pane of glass and had just filled my greenhouse border with 100 lt of fresh compost,
a couple of days later I was breaking all the lumps down by hand and thought "thats not compost" >:(
Needless to say I mended the broken pane of glass that I'd put off doing all winter with haste.

Where I used to live I put chicken mesh on the soil when it was newly dug over, the cats cannot scratch that so they move away.

Yep chicken mesh or plastic netting works well.

Our cats use my raised beds as a loo, so as soon as they are dug they get netted and the poo stops.

As for growing there, yes it is fine. Before i used netting to stop the poo i still grew in the beds with poo burried. Im still alive as is everone else who eats the veg.

I've got the same problem, and just net my bed straight away. I took the poo out!

We've covered this before and it always ends up getting heated - so I've locked this topic before some bright spark suggests doing something nasty and illegal to cats etc.
