Carrots in the greenhouse
« on: March 13, 2010, 19:58 »
I've never managed to grow a good carrot.  Is there time to get a quick row of them in the greenhouse border before I need to put the Toms in ?

The soil is nicely fluffed, very sandy and I've removed most of the rocks.

Basically. no. Why grow them in the greenhouse, they are an outdoor plant?

Not enough time to gow them in the greenhouse before you will need the space for proper greenhouse plants.

We suffer with very bad carrot fly, and I usually grow a row in the cold frame, because the sides are over 30inches high the fly can't get at them.  The rop of the frame on the side the Carrots are grown is left oen all the time and I have had a great deal of luck doing this.  I even managed a third in the local show with them last year.

Shame ....

Conditions  :( As Rugbymad40 says carrot fly are a real problem, I've tried physical barriers and container growing with no success. When I did plant them outside those that weren't ruined by the fly with terribly shaped because of the amount of stones here (It like growing on aggregate !) I've spend an entire week riddling the soil in the greenhouse to 2 spades deep - was hoping I could squeeze a few in quickly.
