Too cold for carrots in greenhouse??
« on: February 19, 2014, 11:44 »
I read an article about growing early carrots in fence paint tubs (cleaned out and drainage holes drilled obviously) and having had them in a light place in a cool room indoors to get them to germinate, they are starting to poke their heads up.
My greenhouse is not heated but they will get leggy won't they if I keep them indoors? I can't believe I have got this far so don't want to mess it up now.
Any thoughts /advice gratefully received.  :)
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

That's true and I can always cover them with fleece if the temp dips a bit.  :D

I sowed some carrot seed in a tub in the greenhouse about 2 weeks ago and there isn't a glimmer yet, but yours might be okay now they have germinated. The fleece sounds like a good idea.

Today I planted some carrot seeds in the soil in my poly tunnel.  So I hope they will come up.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

done the same as snow white a few days ago. planted a early variety. the space was there and the temperatures getting pretty warm in there, just a bit doubtful on the night temps being high enough.

never know til you try. the results will give me something to put in the diary.

Just in case anyone sowing seeds in cold conditions has somehow forgotten to check likely germination times in "Growing FAQ's and other information" > Very useful internet links > Germination Temperatures, you can expect about 50% germination of carrot seed in a soil temperature of 5C, but you will be waiting for 51 days (although the soil should have warmed up before then of course.  ;))

You can expect 93% germination at 10C, in a more reasonable 17 days.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

They certainly won't be OK left in the house - they'll go leggy as you say. You have no other option!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They are in the greenhouse now with a fleece coat on tonight. I've got a soil thermometer so will keep a watchful eye on that. The temp in the greenhouse is all over the place with sun one minute and then cold at night.
