What alternative to Derris?
« on: March 13, 2010, 11:04 »
Following on from a previous topic.

What chemical alternatives to Derris (now that it's not available for legal use) are people using when barrier controlls fail?

I see the smart people are now digging out their DDT on the Derris for Sale topic. I think that we should bring all of these law breakers to the attention of DEFRA and push for the maxinum £5,000 fine.

Our mind-set has to change. Instead of reacting to any pest by applying derris as a scattergun approach we now have to consider whether there are any cultural practices that we can use to prevent damage to our crops such as delaying planting or covering with mesh.

If we cannot keep pests away, or wash them off, or squidge them, then we have the choice of applying chemicals or putting up with the damage.

There are plenty of chemicals for sale, e.g. Bug Off, read the labels.

Do a search for the crop or pest on this site and on RHS. Often the timing of application is critical for sucess e.g. spray for pea maggot when the first flowers are about to open.

I think possibly the two most useful  posts on this forum today  :)

I don't know about Derris but I know an alternative to Dithane is already out on the market so if you want to use these type of products just look around on the legal market.
