Derris for sale?
« on: March 12, 2010, 14:22 »
Please be wary of anyone offering Derris products for sale.

I have seen both Derris Powder and Liquid Derris advertised on eBay in recent weeks. I have reported it on both occasions and it has been removed quickly by eBay.

There appear be a number of unscrupulous people still with stocks of this banned insectacide. Flogging it to the unwary, or uncaring, on eBay is cheaper than paying for it to be disposed of.

I'd better buy some while there's still some left then. Derris is a very useful product, and a natural one at that. The only reason it was withdrawn was because of those darned interfering busybodies in Brussels.

The ingredient of derris is rotenone. This is an indiscriminate insectacide and has links to Parkinsons disease.

It was banned from sale in September 2008 and from use after November 2009.

Either Peterif and Solway Cropper and Alotards are wind up merchants or they are happy to risk the health of their families for the sake of killing a few bugs.

Being the boring law-abiding type I tend to take to following instructions and recommendations of those who know better - unless I do.

When it comes to using chemicals on land where I grow crops to eat I am very cautious - I guess it comes from having a good sense of imagination....

Despite having achieved a reasonable level in chemistry I would still go with health authority recommendations rather than risk either my health or that of my family's by disagreeing - they are there to protect us.

That is right, hard to believe some people openly admit to illegaly using a banned chemical on a public forum.

Let's hope the chemical doesn't get anyone who eats the crops.... Long term effects?
I guess someone knows what they are??

Isn't it true that the real reason it's now banned is because the manufacturer didn't sell enough of it to warrant paying huge EU licences?

The truth is that with the hint of any association with Parkinsons disease every company selling it pulled out to avoid the risk of future litigation.

I've no idea on the validity of the evidence linking it to Parkinsons but I do know when I used to use this routinely in the hen house I never saw any Red Mite but after it was withdrawn I saw plenty after switching to Barrier Red Mite Powder at X20 the cost!
