Toms in Richies paper pots?
« on: March 08, 2010, 11:02 »
I am running out of window sills and space indoors. so I planned yesterday to make richies paper pots (I made them for peas) and got an idea of seeding toms in them. surprise i have 24 pots in rather smallish tray. Since they are cylindrical there is no waste of space.
The question is will they be any good untill plantout or should i pot it before moving to the fleece frame outside?
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

They should be OK if packed neatly in a tray. You could always put a bit of paper around the whole thing to stop flopping.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

cling film keeps them tidy in a seed tray and stops them drying out too much :)

Keep an eye on them, if they get big they may need potting on....depends how big you actually made your pots :)

I think your problem may be that the roots will root-through to neighbouring pots if left too long. It will be a long time yet before Toms are safe to go into a cold greenhouse ... let alone outside.

I think Kristen is right here - keep an eye on the roots/bottom and sides of paper pot. That should tell you alot about what they want.

I've done the same this year - for the first time - as I would normally use seed trays and pot on fairly early, with several 'pot ons'. But I'm guessing with my paper pots being about 10cm tall x 4cm wide, they will probably last a bit longer in their first paper pots and then I'm expecting to pot them on in a few weeks into larger plastic pots. These may be the last before the final 'bucket' sized pots. Hopefully at this point they may be ready for the unheated mini greenhouse  8)
