I know it sounds like a stupid question - but what time of day do hens lay their eggs.  This is after reading things like covering nest boxes at night etc.  Sorry to sound so basic and stupid - doh!!

My 2 have usually laid by lunchtime

Most of mine between 8am and 2 pm, but if they have had a day off they will squeeze one out at first light.

mine lay between daylight and three

between 8 and 3 for us  :)the araucanas  like laying in the afternoon  but the rest are all done usually by 2

Mine lay anytime they damn well feel like it

Mine lay between about 8am and have been known to be as late as 4pm.  Usually morning though.

it takes a hen 25 hours to make and lay an egg so will not be the same time every day

It's like having toddlers, just when you think they're in a routine ... they change it!

One of mine laid her egg when she'd gone to roost for the night she obviously didnt want to get down into the nesting box.  It didnt splat but the shell cracked slightly as it had hit the floor cos I gather they are quite soft when they lay the egg and if she had been a bit closer to the ground it might have made it before it went hard.

Mine lay at any time yesterday i went up to them at 5pm and the cuckoo maran was sitting on the nest finaly producing her egg at about 5-15pm. The lttle devil but i love her.
