Shallots
« on: February 22, 2010, 21:17 »
Evening everyone

I'm sure I don't but would just like to double check I dont have to chit/sprout my onion and/or shallots sets before planting.

I only got them from the £1 but that was awhile ago by the time I get chance to plant I think they may be too soft and no good

Regards
Missy

Missy, can you start them off in modules? This will give you a bit of leeway.

Thanks David

This will at least give me something to do and may well stop them all spoiling.

I know they are pretty hardy but should I cover with anything if I keep them in my plastic greenhouse?

Sorry more questions

Missy

I am going to start shallots tomorrow in a frost free greenhouse. I will, however, cover them with fleece, you should do the same. :D

If you are using bubble, just make sure you take it off during the day, to prevent a build up of mildew.

Why not just keep the sets cool and dark until the weather is settled enough to get them in the ground?

Shallots are one of the easiest and hardiest crops going and don't need any of this faffing about!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Yup.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well, if you read the original post, Missy thinks they could be going over, so the obvious thing is to pot them up.

To me that implies they haven't gone soft yet.

I stand to be corrected. And, Craggy, if the ground isn`t suitable for them to be planted, what next?
