The rule of thumb is. Late potatoes early, early potatoes late. Late, or main crop potatoes, will take the colder conditions of late winter/ early spring. Early potatoes, having a shorter growing season, need the ground to be warm, so that they can start to grow straight away and keep growing until harvesting. Usually about 12 weeks.

But that's why we earth up, so they don't lose their tops :)

and down in the south (and lots of other places)...early potatoes go in, in mid march.........come to think of it they all go in within a week or so of that planting date :)

but why give yourself more worries,by putting them in now.mine go in 3rd week of march,and i still have to watch the weather.

Main crop, late february/ early march. 1st early, 3rd/ 4th week of march, 2nd early. 4th week of march/1st week of april.
