Think NigelB must use his canes as missiles from his lofty ramparts if they only last a couple of years!

Obviously you get the odd breakage but I've still got full-length canes over 10 years old - just don't leave them in the ground for longer than necessary and store in a cool dry place.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Yes be very very of replanting them, they are very easy rooters  I'd wait a year to be on the safeside .....................unless you mind grubbing them out if they do shoot this year??

I use hazel, cut from our hedge and left for 4 weeks, never had a problem with it rooting.

You could always grow your own bamboo in large pots!

I've just bought canes for my new lotty, and I intend to seal the ends of them with a two part adhesive such as Araldite to stop the soil getting inside. At the end of the season, I'll give them a wipe down with Jeyes, and then a wipe down with linseed oil to stop them drying and splitting.

Before using new canes, dip the bottom foot in wood preservative. :D

I haven't got a bottom foot.

Just one left and one right.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
