Parsnips in modules
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:59 »
Hello There

Last year i planted my parsnip seed straight into the ground, about mid feb.
I had reasonably results.
This year i'm going to try 20 plants (if they all sprout)in modules (tolet rolls) and the rest i'll leave the sowing till mid march onwards dependent on weather.
The module parsnips will sit on windowsill and i will gradully harden them off as they grow.
Has anyone else tried this method or simlar, and how was there results.

Thank's for looking

I did parsnips in Richys last year and they did fine, you have to put them out fairly quick though as they send down a tap root which very quickly gets to the bottom of the pot. this obviously turns into the parsnip so if it gets damaged it causes the parsnip to be a funny shape

I've not done them in modules or loo roll before but I know many folk swear by that method.

Last year I just planted 4 rows worth straight into the ground and most of them germinated so I will do the same this year. Although I did sow 3-4 seeds "per parsnip" with the logic that there were so many seeds in the packet and the seeds wouldnt keep till the following year so what did I have to lose! Maybe it was beginner's luck.

That's a standard method of sowing, one my grandfather used & I copied with good effect.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I usually put a cloche up for a couple of weeks to warm the soil underneath then plant straight into the ground. Works for me... we live in Dorset so wether that makes a difference,  we seem to have our own little microclimate here lol.

Can I add that you can successfully transplant the thinnings; I did last year and they were no different from the undisturbed ones (mind you my soil is sandy so quite easy to get them out and back in without damage)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
