Beetroot in modules
« on: March 14, 2012, 12:07 »
I've not grown beetroot before and I've decided to start some seed in modules as I'm not sure where I want to put them on the allotment yet.  They are Red Hawk F1.  The heated propagator is a bit crowded - will they germinate on the greenhouse bench with a plastic tray lid?  I keep it frost free and it doesn't go down below 7C.

I don't grow mine in modules, as I'm not a careful transplanter!

Seeing as mine will be going direct into the ground next month, that'll be plenty warm enough, they don't want to be too warm.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Last year I started some off early in the greenhouse and they were fine.

Thanks both.

I'm snowed under with seed sowing at the moment, having been away for a week.  It's mainly veg but I must get the flowers started too.  It's lovely to have a greenhouse but I wish it was twice as big  :)

My modules are outside and the seedlings are just showing. I cover them with a clear lid every night, though.

Would just leave them on the greenhouse staging rather than in a propagator. If its going to get really cold give them a little heat, but they dont need alot

I put 2 seeds in paper pots and leave them in the garage at night and outside during the day. I don't have to worry about not being careful when transplanting them.
I plant these first to get some early crops but after that it is straight in the ground.

I'm planning (sorry hoping) to sow into about 60 modules this weekend (2 seeds to a space) . They will grow on in an unheated greenhouse for a couple of weeks, hardened off and into the ground by mid april (hopefully).  At that time I'll be sowing another row direct into the ground.

Beetroot is half hardy and as such it is a little on the early side to sow in the ground. You would normally wait until April, but as you are fairly far south in the country, they may be OK.

My plot seems to eat seeds  ::)  Everyone on the site has the same problem - think it is a combination of heavy clay soil and being next to an old cemetary which is managed for wildlife, so we have the world of critters from mice and voles to muntjac deer.

Upshot is I nearly always start in modules and plant out as clumps - 3 beetroot seed to a module, 6 or so spring onions and so on.  Having started yet but will soon in the unheated greenhouse, so in a heated grenhouse like yours Barbarella, they will get going in no time  :)

I sowed some beetroot in modules for the first time last year - worked really well. Just make sure that you plant them carefully so that you do not disturb their roots and do not leave leave them too long in the modules before planting. I will be doing the same this year just to get a good start.
