removing grass from plot
« on: February 10, 2010, 12:36 »
One tier of my plot has a thin layer of grass growing over it. Wouldnt say it was as thick as garden turf, but theres a sparce coating! Should i take the top layer off to make loam or do you think it would be ok to just dig it in when i dig the area over!?
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

If it's not got any couch mixed in with it then turn it upsidedown and bury it when you next dig. Unless of course you need the loam, in which case skim it of the top and stack it upsidedowm in a covered pile for six months.

We'd all like that!

As SS said if it's annual grass, it won't grow back through 6" of soil.

Any seeds kicking around - different matter!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have just spent months getting rid of couch grass because it's back breaking work as you know. But the way i look at it the time it takes to take the top layer off you may as well dig the roots out while your there it will save time in the long run. Plus you put it to one side and it will make good compost later on. I had so much of it i made a little wall at the end of the plot to sit on!!

Happy digging!!

If it there is some couch grass present apply Roundup, wait 10 days and dig it in as advised above
