Thare have been quite a few threads on chitting potatoes recently.  Have a look in the search facility.

I don't hold with the Easter bit as it can vary by over a month, from March 22 to April 25.

I aim to start planting by late March. If I was still planting late April I'd consider myself way behind.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's what they say as a rule of thumb, but as soon as I get mine I set them up to chit as it's also a way of storing them without getting long white chits. Mine will be chitting for about 8 weeks this year, it was longer last year.

In fact have a look at this. These had been chitting for 6 months:

(Blight got most of them though, got a few Sarpo Mira, which are not the greatest new spuds).

Sorry to hijack but a quick question - I ordered some small packs of seed potatoes from a well known seed company and they arrived this week. A couple of the potatoes already have white chits that I have been reading on the recent potato threads aren't good. What do I do? Can I just cut them off and hope they develop other healthy chits or are the potatoes lost?!

Thanks!

Long white chits aren't good, if these are only small I'd leave them. They'll soon green & sturdy up in the light.
