Transporting chooks
« on: January 18, 2010, 14:19 »
Hi. On another thread about the price of hens I discovered that the average price in Hants is extortionate. I found a supplier near my parents in south Wales that sells hens for about one quarter of the Hants price. So I plan to 'import' them next time my parents visit  :) What do they need for a 3-hour journey? Box/cage/food/water - recommendations pse.

Thanks, N

Cosy dark box with plenty of ventilation and some bedding ... in the dark they will sleep and not need to feed ... although they'll be thirsty when they arrive so have something ready ...
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

I brought three back from Chichester in a large "Flymo" cardboard box.
They promptly escaped (like the "A Team") and spent they long journey home perched on top of the back seat.
I got some amusing looks whilst in traffic on the M6

I bought some cardboard pet carriers from Pets at Home for a couple of pounds each and then put some straw in the bottom. When I got them home they were snuggled down quite cosily!

As already mentioned ventilation is important. I brought a trio back from a breeder in a cardboard box she supplied and they were way too hot when I got them home after a half hour journey  ::)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi again Neil!
The box I took wasn't big enough for 3 so the lady gave me a pellets sack which she made holes in for Bluebell. Not recommended! She nearly pecked her way out in the 20 mins home!
I agree with previous advice. Sturdy boxes lined with newspaper and a bit of straw/sawdust, plenty of ventilation holes round the top and make sure the boxes are able to be shut TIGHT. Make sure the boxes can't slide around too. You don't want to be distracted when you're driving!
Hopefully, if it's dark enough they'll just sleep.
Make sure there's water and food in the run and they can access the coop easily then pop them in when you get back!
How many are you getting?

You can always put a seat belt around the box to stop it sliding around :)

I have always used a large cardboard box with a half inch slit cut into the sides for vetelation. Plenty of straw in the bottom and string around the top to stop them escaping. It has always worked for me.
