Though doesn't always mean they won't still sleep in the nest boxes!

Mine have a nice perch, but some still prefer to snuggle down, and then lay eggs in poo if I don't get down there in time to clear it out.

I think there is a common beleif that setting up with hens is cheap.  It probably has been but in a world of foxes and redmite it really is wiser (and more cost effective) to set up properly for years of hassle free wonderful hen keeping.

Please get an eglu and be foxproof (you'll need weldmesh) and loads of good advice on here given freely by people who know and aren't trying to sell you anything.

I know I am a newby to this but please don't buy a cocoon. We did & it is a waste of money. My husband is 6' 4" tall with very long arms & he has a real job trying to clean it out. Bits don't fit well either. We have had to rebuild parts of it. Also the run area is not adequate for more than 1 bird even though the model we bought should accommodate 8.
